Seeking a life direction within Sociology
Getting a university degree is one of the most important stages in your life. What will you find from Sociology at CUHK? Each of the four letters in the word “seek,” S-E-E-K, represents a feature of our programme: Self-determination, Empowering, Empathic and Knowledgeable. What will you find from Sociology at CUHK? Each of the four letters in the word “seek,” S-E-E-K, represents a feature of our programme: Self-determination, Empowering, Empathic and Knowledgeable.
Our programme emphasises your active participation in shaping your own learning path and in making your university life meaningful.
You will relish our flexible curriculum. Only 18 credit units are reserved for the four required courses. Your learning experience is personalised by earning the remaining 34 credit units from a wide range of elective courses across the breadth of Sociology.
Many of our students take advantage of such curricular flexibility to pursue a minor programme or to spend one or two semesters overseas on an exchange programme. We strongly encourage multidisciplinary and multicultural learning experiences.
We offer four areas of concentration: Social Research, China Studies, Sociology and Liberal Studies, and Crime, Law and Society.
- 本系聯合法律學院合辦「社會學學士 + 法學博士」雙學位課程(double degree)，最快可在六年完成，讓有志從事法律相關的同學修讀。
We offer a BSSc (Sociology) – Juris Doctor double-degree option in collaboration with the Faculty of Law for students interested in pursuing careers in the legal profession.
- 本系聯合新聞與傳播學院合辦雙主修（double major）課程，你可以自由修讀。
We offer a double-major option in Sociology and Journalism and Communication in conjunction with the School of Journalism for students who are interested in pursuing media careers.
We offer a variety of scholarships and summer internships that broaden students’ horizons and cultivate their ability to work independently.
Our programme is kept at a reasonable size, with a yearly intake of no more than 60 students, to ensure a student-staff ratio conducive to close relationships between the two.
Our specially designed orientation course entitled “Approaching Sociology” familiarises newcomers with Sociology’s distinctive approaches to the study of social life. You will benefit from interactive small group discussions and close contact with senior dedicated teachers.
Our academic mentoring programme is distinct with CUHK. Your instructor for “Approaching Sociology” will get to know you as a person and become your mentor, offering academic support until you graduate.
You will benefit from our innovative teaching methods such as e-Learning. Our diverse pedagogical techniques are aimed at developing your academic competence and transferable skills.
Our faculty won doctorates from top universities around the world, and are continually engaged in high-profile research projects with significant impact.
We are devoted to training our students rigorously in research methods in the belief that research skills are a valuable asset, whether graduates pursue a career in the professions or postgraduate study.
We offer you frontier knowledge in Sociology, a global discipline. About 90% of our courses are conducted in English. You can be one of our latest intake if you have strong language ability, as evidenced by good grades in language subjects.
We offer broad-based training that emphasises both disciplinary knowledge and generic competence. Our graduates are generally well equipped with solid research skills and the capacity to critically analyse social phenomena. Both are highly desirable in the public and private sectors.
